This vigorous member of the onion family is a well known herb, with edible leaves which taste and smell similar to onions and enhance the flavour of many savoury dishes.
The leaves of Allium schoenoprasum are hollow, long, thin and dark green. In summer, clusters of light purple button-like flowers are produced on upright stems and it is perfect for a sunny well-drained border or gravel garden.
