The Christmas Rose gets its name because it can be found flowering around Christmas time and throughout the rest of winter and into early spring. Helleborus niger is an evergreen perennial that forms a clump over time. It has mid-dark green leathery leaves that are divided into toothed leaflets.

The winter flowers of Helleborus niger are white and saucer shaped. Other Helleborus species and cultivars have pink, purple, white pale green or white freckled purple/pink flowers.

Helleborus niger is ideal for planting in a woodland garden.
