Northern fruit

Postby Joknight » 08 Mar 2007 21:11

Friends getting married would like fruit trees for the garden but they live on a windswept hillside 1000ft above sea level in County Durham There is a 3ft wall around the garden. Any suggestions for any fruit tree or bush suitable?!

Hello,
An excellent question. Finding fruit suitable for cultivation on an exposed site is not easy.
Blueberries are one of the super foods of the moment with many health benefits. They need to be grown in ericaceous compost so how about a blueberry bush growing in a pot sheltered by the 3ft wall.
Also consider raspberries or blackberries trained on that wall. A plum or apple tree on a very dwarf rootstock could be trained in fan, cordon or espalier formation on wires on the wall.
