Lack of edible fruit on Fig tree

Hi,
I have a fig tree which is in soil that I think is far too rich for it, but cannot do much about this due to its position. The tree fruits a number of times each year, but the crop of fruits that eventually ripen is minimal.
This year three fruits have reached this stage whilst the tree now has well over a hundred good fruits on it, which I know from past years will not mature sufficiently. The tree is also in need of a very serious pruning. How can I best encourage fruiting for eating? I am situated in an area where fig trees seem to flourish, South West Wales. I would like to eat more fruit from mine.
Any suggestions? Thanks.
